What the Children Deserve

Lately, I heard someone give voice to an all-too-familiar phrase in the Christian lexicon.  One that sounds piously self-defacing and is, I’m sure, intended to exalt God. However, on closer examination I believe it ends up doing just the opposite, stealing from God a goodly part of the glory of his Fatherhood!

The unfortunate expression is this: We deserve hell.

Renovation of the Heart: The Will and Character - Part 2 of 2

"The heart (will, spirit) is precisely what God observes and addresses in human beings. He cares little or nothing for outward show. He responds to the heart because it is, above all, who we are: who we choose and have chosen to be. What God wants of us can only come from there." Dallas Willard, Renovation of the Heart

Renovation of the Heart: The Will and Character - Part 1 of 2

"Character is revealed most of all in what we feel and do without thinking. But to a lesser extent it is revealed in what we repent of after thinking and what we then do as a result of repenting. Thought, feeling, and will give rise to character." Dallas Willard, Renovation of the Heart

The Cure of Simon’s Wife’s Mother

"Bare as the narrative is, the event it records has elements which might have been moulded with artistic effect -- on the one side the woman tossing in the folds of the fever, on the other the entering Life." George MacDonald.

God’s Family

"The cry of the deepest in man has always been to see God. It was the cry of Moses and the cry of Job, the cry of the psalmist and of prophet; and to the cry there has ever been faintly heard a far approach of coming answer." So begins another of MacDonald's compelling sermons.

Disappointment

If you've never found yourself disappointed in God, hang on! Sooner or later--days, weeks, months, maybe years--it's going to be your turn. And if you don't think it can happen to you than you've forgotten that the student is not above his Master.

Jesus and His Fellow Townsmen

George MacDonald takes us on an insightful journey into the condition of the hearts of men and women -- hearts such as may be our own -- as reflected in Jesus' neighbors in Nazareth.

Followers of The Way

I think it a good idea for those who identify themselves as “Christians” to put ourselves in the shoes of our critics and gain what insight there is to be had from their observations and perspectives. Although we may not agree with everything they have to say—perhaps not even with the bulk of it—nevertheless, there is often truth enough in some of their criticisms for us to reflect on when viewed in the illuminating light of our Lord’s own words.

In his book, The Call, Os Guinness presents just such an insightful look in a chapter entitled Followers Of the Way.

Jesus: Who Is He and Why Did He Come?

Just as important as it is to think through what makes up the good news of the gospel is the need to arrive at an answer as to who Jesus is and why he came. The question calls for thinking beyond any cliches we may have either heard or adopted without adequate evaluation. We need to get a firm handle on both what the good news is and the identity and motivation of the One proclaiming and embodying it to gain the needed appreciation for the expansive nature of God's Fatherhood.
