Lessons At Sea

Like many of the events recorded for us in the Gospel records, Matthew's recounting of Peter's walking on water with the Lord provides a wealth of insight into the Person of Jesus Christ and our relationship to God through him.

Disappointment

If you've never found yourself disappointed in God, hang on! Sooner or later--days, weeks, months, maybe years--it's going to be your turn. And if you don't think it can happen to you than you've forgotten that the student is not above his Master.

The Friendship of Trials

Each of our lives is chock full of trials, some minor irritations and others hitting us like a personal earthquake! Our natural reaction is to wish for a carefree life absent of such discomforts. But what if trials were actually gifts allowed into our lives for our eternal good? Might we then welcome them as friends?

What the Children Deserve

Lately, I heard someone give voice to an all-too-familiar phrase in the Christian lexicon.  One that sounds piously self-defacing and is, I’m sure, intended to exalt God. However, on closer examination I believe it ends up doing just the opposite, stealing from God a goodly part of the glory of his Fatherhood!

The unfortunate expression is this: We deserve hell.

Just What Is a Christian Anyway (Part 1)

I recently heard one of the Republican candidates running for President described as a RINO: Republican In Name Only. In other words, although the individual was running on the Republican ticket, some in the party felt his positions fell short of a true representation of traditional Republication values. In fact, these critics were saying his voting record looked more like someone who was a Democratic.

So it goes in politics…

But the point made is an intriguing one: we can call ourselves one thing while, at the same time, behaving more like something else. We can call ourselves a “Christian” while looking quite unlike its founder, Jesus Christ.

So just what is a “Christian”?

Literally and simply stated, a Christ-ian is a follower of Christ. He or she may not look like much when they first start following Jesus but, over time, they mature into an ever closer reflection of their Elder Brother and Lord. But only if they truly follow and do what Jesus tells them to do.

Let me share with you an excerpt from Michael Phillips’ book, The Commands, in response to the question of what it means to follow Jesus.

Quite simply: To obey what he tells us to do, to do what he says, to think as he thinks, to respond as he responds, to love as he loves, to see people as he sees people them, to see God as he sees him, to pray as he prayed to lay down self-will as he laid down his self-will, to take his example into every decision, every response, every attitude, every conversation.

One might well despair of such an all-encompassing definition rightly acknowledging the distance between ourselves and Jesus Christ. Perhaps it will help if we read together the last two chapters of C.S. Lewis’s classic work, Mere Christianity, aptly titled Nice People or New Men, and, The New Men, respectively. For, if we follow Jesus, God intends to make us, like his Son, perfect. True Christ-ians.

Salvation from Sin: Seven Startling (Well Maybe) Takeaways

The last several episodes of FatherBound were a sharing of George MacDonald’s Salvation from Sin. I find myself indebted to MacDonald for his insight into God’s character, a witness to the soaring of his unfathomable love that billows to the heights of our imaginations through this wonderful sermon. Of special note are the following:

  1. The first place we must begin in an effort to rid the human race of evil is ourselves.
  2. Our sinful deeds are but the dead husks of the live sins in our heart.
  3. Jesus came, not to save us from the punishment of our sin, but from sin itself, its presence in us.
  4. We must agree with God as to our sin and begin to send it away through a choice of our will.
  5. Hell itself is an extension of God’s love and has a redemptive purpose.
  6. When our sin has departed, so shall the punishment.
  7. Salvation lies in faith in the living Christ.

As we touch on each of the above points in turn we will find ample opportunity to think boldly as we encounter ideas that may run counter to those we have held. Mining for precious stones is hard work, the earth clings tightly to her treasures. Let us not shirk the challenge involved in diligent thinking when the ideas presented are unfamiliar. It will be worth the effort!

Jesus: Who Is He and Why Did He Come?

Just as important as it is to think through what makes up the good news of the gospel is the need to arrive at an answer as to who Jesus is and why he came. The question calls for thinking beyond any cliches we may have either heard or adopted without adequate evaluation. We need to get a firm handle on both what the good news is and the identity and motivation of the One proclaiming and embodying it to gain the needed appreciation for the expansive nature of God's Fatherhood.

The Gospel: Just What Is The Good News?

It's hard to underscore the need to get a handle on just what makes up "the good news" that Jesus came to deliver to mankind, the core of his message. The conclusion each of us reaches has practical impact.

An Introduction to Father Bound

It is my belief that God is the Father of us all. And it is my earnest hope that each of us is on a journey back to where we began: the very heart of God. I am convinced we are, each one of us, Father bound.
